DevOps Engineer

At Umbel, we believe data is the most valuable asset a business can own. With the Umbel data management platform, some of the most recognizable names in sports and entertainment access, acquire, activate and analyze their customer data to increase engagement, revenue and loyalty. Founded in 2010, Umbel is headquartered in Austin, Texas.

We are looking for an experienced DevOps Engineer to join our team and help maintain, scale, and streamline our infrastructure and architecture. The Umbel application runs on a complex distributed cloud-based infrastructure. Using a host of modern platforms and technologies, we move and manage a substantial scale and variety of data. You will be involved in managing our continuous integration and deployment systems, containerization and orchestration of our services, and keeping a wide array of distributed systems available. This is a critical role for continuing to serve our high-profile Sports and Entertainment clients, assuring data integrity, and preparing for continued growth and scalability.

What You Must Have:

  • Ambition and optimism, offset with realism. We are an ambitious startup with big goals. We take big chances and know that optimism and perseverance are the keys to wild success — and we are tested on that daily. If this excites you, great. If uncertainty is uncomfortable, this might not be the right place for you.
  • Curiosity backed by execution. This is a tech startup, and you should be prepared to geek out on the intricacies of big data. There’s a lot to learn and define, and you will naturally need to be obsessed with staying ahead of the curve. But it doesn’t stop there. You must leverage that learning and turn it into creating amazing experiences both inside and outside of Umbel.
  • Motivation and determination. Exciting — and daunting — challenges face us every day at Umbel. We excel in the pursuit of challenging goals. Umbel is looking for fighters, who go to bed and wake up each day with a fire in the belly.

What You Must Do To Be Successful In This Position:

  • Write tooling for managing infrastructure, deploying code, and monitoring a complex distributed system
  • Be a first-responder for system level alerts
  • Help identify opportunities for additional scalability, cost optimization, performance improvements, reliability upgrades, fault tolerance and resilience to interruptions throughout our infrastructure
  • Identify creative opportunities to manage continued growth in the scale and breadth of our data assets
  • Help to harden our systems and processes to keep all our dashboards green

What Skills & Experience We’d Like You To Have:

  • Experience writing Python
  • Strong background with managing a Django web application, or similar framework
  • Knowledge of RabbitMQ and Celery is a big plus
  • 2+ years of experience with Cassandra, ElasticSearch, MySQL
  • Experience with Configuration Management. Umbel currently uses Salt
  • Know Git and Github backwards and forwards
  • At least 1-2 years working with Docker
  • Container Orchestration experience: Preferably ECS, Swarm and/or Kubernetes
  • Linux Administration experience or exposure: Preferably Ubuntu
  • The more you know about AWS, the better
  • Continuous Integration, preferably CirlceCI
  • Basic knowledge of distributed systems

What You Will Get Out Of It:

  • A team of talented, hard-working colleagues
  • The opportunity to invent new solutions, grow your career and enhance your skill set
  • 100% employer-paid health insurance premiums (medical, dental & vision)
  • Unlimited paid vacation policy
  • Competitive compensation including cash and stock options
  • Monthly fitness activity reimbursement and provided health tracking technology
  • Community involvement
  • The ability to learn and grow from technology innovators and disruptors
  • An incredible office location in downtown Austin with on-site parking included
